Never After: The Thirteenth Fairy

Amazon Summary:

Nothing ever happens in Filomena Jefferson-Cho’s sleepy little suburban town of North Pasadena. The sun shines every day, the grass is always a perfect green, and while her progressive school swears there’s no such thing as bullying, she still feels bummed out. But one day, when Filomena is walking home on her own, something strange happens.

Filomena is being followed by Jack Stalker, one of the heroes in the Thirteenth Fairy, a series of books she loves about a brave girl and her ragtag group of friends who save their world from an evil enchantress. She must be dreaming, or still reading a book. But Jack is insistent—he’s real, the stories are real, and Filomena must come with him at once!

Soon, Filomena is thrust into the world of evil fairies and beautiful princesses, sorcerers and slayers, where an evil queen drives her ruthless armies to destroy what is left of the Fairy tribes. To save herself and the kingdom of Westphalia, Filomena must find the truth behind the fairytales and set the world back to rights before the cycle of sleep and destruction begins once more

My Review:

7.5/10

This book review is a quick one. I had to read this book fast because I got approved for the Stolen Slipper’s book 2 in the Never After series (which I got a galley of).

Onto the actual review:

So firstly the idea/plot. The idea is quite genius actually, but a little played out. It is the story of a lonely girl who gets thrown into a fantasy world and must survive and work together with her favorite characters from the book. Sound familiar? The characters were very bland to some extent and a few (the main characters) were well fleshed out. None of the side characters in the series had a backstory and it felt just like they didn’t have a purpose in the story. The idea was super cute and was like a hybrid of a very popular book series. (I am scared to name it because I don’t want to get the backlash. All you need to know is it involves a lightning bolt scar.)

The actual vocabulary was not that advanced and easy to understand so the words made sense. The writing does transport you to Never After, the magical realm. (I would love to visit.) However, there was so much going on and it was hard to comprehend the five WH’s. I love a fast-paced book, but sometimes there is a point where it is too much action for someone to comprehend. What makes a great writer is being able to keep one story line going and the ability to keep the plot clear at any given time.

OVERALL:

This book would be something fun to read to your children at bedtime. It was a fun and thrilling ride but sometimes a little too fun. And now I am ready for the second book and hopefully can knock it out quickly so I can get the review up on Netgalley.
