Daphne and Velma Novel #1: The Vanishing Girl

Updated: Oct 11, 2022

10 /10 It's the classic girl detectives like you've never seen them before! Daphne Blake and Velma Dinkley have a terrifying new mystery to solve - and this time, the culprit is far more frightening than any man in a mask…

My Summary:

So this is a very modern take on Scooby-Doo. Daphne and Velma are friends with Shaggy, Fred and Scooby, at least when they were 10, and in elementary school. Daphne's family bought the town from the Dinkley’s, and it caused Daphne’s parents to split up. Daphne blamed Velma for her parent’s divorce. They never were friends again.

Fast forward a couple of years, and Daphne has joined a new group of friends and becomes a stereotypical mean girl. Velma had no friends, and is a loner. She spends every friday at the library, working with Dr. Hunter, a man, to learn about the history of Crystal Cove. Daphne’s parents turned the town into a tourist attraction, and profited off the land. Both Velma and her mother have jobs at the amusement park.

One day when Velma went to work in the morning, she opened up one of the shops and saw Marcy Heller, one of Daphne’s friends, locked in a jail cell crying. She blamed it on a ghost, and caused Velma’s mom, the night shift worker, to almost get fired. The most unlikely of circumstances, bring Daphne and Velma together, not quite as friends. When Velma wakes up the next morning, she finds a voicemail from Marcy who is nowhere to be found. The girls need to work together to find out what happened to Marcy.

My Review:

So I am a huge fan of Scooby-Doo. Daphne was always the bait in the show, but this time, she actually had some ideas that proved to be very useful to solving the case. I really liked how they had the Hex Girls in the story. Fred wasn’t really mentioned in the book, but Shaggy played a major role. He also comes up with a plan to help solve the case. Scooby-Doo has a pattern, so it was kind of obvious from the beginning who the culprit was, but it was a fun read to see how they got to the conclusion. All I wish was that Scooby played a bigger role in the book, but it was just as good. I will definitely be reading the sequel.
