The Inheritance Games

Updated: Apr 17, 2021

8/10 A Cinderella story with deadly stakes and thrilling twists.

Book summary: Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into a sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

My review:

Halfway point: OK wow. I was wrong, thinking this book would be boring. I read the first half in a week. Some of the characters are really well fleshed out. When we were first introduced to Avery Grambs, it was so detailed, I could draw her, matching the description. The house was just as I thought it would be. The turns and secret tunnels amazed me. There was a tunnel in Avery’s room!

End of book: I am speechless. OK so I did not see that coming. I was completely wrong with my predictions. There were so many plot twists and hidden clues, it’s like a longer Nancy Drew book. When I started this book I was a little confused. I was waiting for the action to start. By the fifth chapter, we were already in the book. The only reason I gave this book an eight and not a ten was because the brothers were very confusing. Since there were two families and they were all brothers, but not completely, so there were too many families, because the dad had so many different families.
